2007-6-8 stone dust is much better. I've used both stone dust and sand and currently I used stone dust for a flagstone patio. The good thing about stone dust is that no weeds grow through it and it packs down a lot harder. Almost like cement. They do have special sand that allows no weeds as well but its more expensive than stone dust.

The local stone yard calles it "road base" among other things. Four to six inches of that stuff are compacted before the stone and levelling sand are laid. For filling in gaps, we have always used mason sand for pavers and bricks, and actually we just use the road base itself to fill in for a flagstone application. Just my 2 cents.
